Coaching Staff

Coach Alva is a USA Swimming Certified coach. She is also certified in Red Cross CPR/First Aid and undergoes background checks from USA Swimming every two years.

 

She has over 15 years of experience teaching many levels of swimming, from non-swimmers,beginners to advanced So Cal Junior Olympic swimmers, and over 8 years of coaching club teams. She has taught over 1000 students and trained nearly half of her club team swimmers to reach Southern California Junior Olympic time cuts, sometimes in as little time as a couple of months. She began teaching at the early age of 16 as soon as she began college. at Xi'an Physical Education University, where she received her Bachelor's degree in Education, with an emphasis in Swimming, She was recruited as a young child to train and has swum for most of her young life. She also swam with Shanxi State's Swim Team in China, as one of their top swimmers.

 

In 2013, Coach Alva partnered with other coaches and started SGV Swimming. Now, Coach Alva is excited to be opening her own swim school. Passion, hard work and quality are 3 things she advocates at every lesson. She is a very animated and friendly coach who truly enjoys teaching and coaching to help her students achieve their true potential.

Coach Jocelyn is CPR/Lifeguard/First Aid/AED certified and has 5+ years of teaching and age group coaching experience of different age groups and levels.  She was a competitive swimmer for 11+ years and swam DII at Western Colorado University. She currently has a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise & Sport Science with an emphasis in Physical Education.

Coach Julian has been teaching for 10 years, and is now going onto his 5th year teaching with Alva. He has been swimming for 22 years, and can work with any age/skill level. He's really patient while teaching kids and also has a lot of experience with teaching adults. 

Coach Caroline is Red Cross Lifeguard/First Aid certified and has her Water Safety Instructor certification. She swam competitively for 8 years, and played waterpolo for 6 years up to the collegiate level. She has been teaching with our swim school for 2 years now, and has the ability to teach any age/skill level. She works well with kids and has a lot of patience!

Coach Ashley is a First Aid/CPR certified coach. She has been swimming for over 10 years and still swims competitively today. Although she specializes in freestyle and backstroke, she has a strong understanding of all four swim strokes. She is experienced in working with both children and adults. One key aspect of her training involves a high standard for patients. At each lesson, she will be sure to provide the swimmer with her undivided attention and teach at a pace the student is comfortable with. 

Coach Priscilla is Lifeguard, first Aid, and CPR-AED certified. She has been swimming since she was a child and has always loved being in the water.  She is an outgoing and friendly person. As an instructor, she is nurturing and patient, but stern when needed. For example, if she has beginner students, she will ease their fears and encourage them to try new tasks and have fun while learning. For her more experienced swimmers, she will push them to improve their swimming abilities so that they can reach their goals. Also to mention, she has over 3 years of USA Club Coaching experience and well as 2 years of High School Coaching. She teaches technique before speed and endurance and makes sure that her students know survival skills, which she believe are crucial before perfecting strokes. She encourage parents to communicate with her about their child’s progress and/or goals that they would like their child to meet.

Coach Davina has been teaching since 2005 and is currently aspiring to become a water therapist. She has been a swim coach for a few years and also teaches aqua aerobics. She has the ability to teach/coach any age, gender, and skill level. She has teaching experiences with people who have mental/physical disabilities as well. She hopes to see you in the water soon!

Coach Kate  is now going into her seventh year swimming competitively. She is Red Cross Lifeguard/First Aid certified and is able to speak Chinese. She has experience teaching young children but is excited to work with any age and skill level. She is able to teach both basics of swimming and more advanced technique. 

Coach Charles has been swimming competitively for 10 years now. He is fundamentally sound in all four strokes. He is also fluent in Chinese and can teach mandarin speaking swimmers. He is also very easy going and can teach all ages.
